From Friday next to Sunday the European Athletics Team Championships First League takes place in Sandnes in Norway.and Thomas Barr is on the Irish team competing in the 400 metres hurdles and 4 x 400 metres relay.Ten other countries will be participating and Thomas will run in the 400 metres hurdles on Friday evening and the relay on Sunday afternoon. As this is a team competition all the athletes in their events will be striving to get the best placings they can for their team as each place is allocated points from 1st getting top points down to 11 th getting the least.
At the Youths Cup match in Santry on Saturday last between Ireland and England two athletes from Waterford clubs were on the Irish team. Kylie Heinen Ferrybank cleared 1.65 metres in the high jump a personal best for her and she was third in the competition, Lucy Holmes West Waterford was also third in the 800 metres in 2 minutes 14.83 seconds and Cathal Scanlon who is also a Waterford native and who competes with Leevale in Cork was again third in the javelin with 55.37 metres.

150 competed in the 27 th Annual Marine Bar Climb 6 miles in the Dungarvan area last Thursday evening and first home was Anthony Flynn in 35minutes 35 seconds , Alan Hogan was second in 36.32 and Gary Cantwell third in 36.45 all West Waterford,first lady home was Madeline Loughnane Thurles in 40.14, Natalie Sheehan West Waterford was second in 41.39 and Collette Tuohy Mayo third in 41.54 The category winners were Ladies; F 35 Keely Tideswell Clonmel ,F40 Elaine Horgan do, F45Teresa Cunningham Nore Valley, F50 Stephanie Isley St Nicholas,Cork Junior Lucy Tuohy Mayo.Men M40 Dermot O'Donovan West Waterford, M45 Dermot Ryan do, M50 Eugene O'Keeffe Carrick on Suir, M55 Rah Hahessy West Waterford Junior Conor Mullaney do. It was race 10 of the Intersport Elvery's /Asics Series.
Ballyduff Lower 5 miles Run and Walk
This years Ballyduff Lower SE2 sponsored 5 miles Liz Hayes Memorial Road Race and Walk takes place in Ballyduff Lower Co Waterford on next Friday August 9th, with walkers setting off at 6.45pm and runners at 7.30pm. Entry is 10 euro for the race and 5 euro for the walk with all of the proceeds going towards the Ballyduff Community Centre Redevelopment Fund and Focus Ireland. The National Half Marathon is in Dublin on Sunday incorporated into the Rock and Roll event.Coming up on Friday August 16 th is the Glaxo Smithkline 5 miles road race in Dungarvan at 7 pm another race in the Intersport Elvery's /Asics Series

Last week news broke of the death of Tommy Purcell from Mooncoin whom anyone in athletics would have known and have fond memories of from his time as a groundsman at the RSC.
