At the All Ireland University Outdoor Championships in Athlone last Friday and Saturday Phil Healy from Bandon competing with WIT was the star .She set new records in winning the 100 metres in 11.51 and the 200 metres in 23.04 the fastest in Europe so far this year,Ryan Carthy Walsh won the high jump and there were third placings by Órlaith O'Brien in the javelin,Denise O'Connor in the 400 metres hurdles and Aaron Smith in the 110 metres hurdles. Kae Veale was in Slovakia last Saturday competing in a top class international 20 km walk and in a field of 104 she finished in 26 th place in a seasons best time of 1 hr 44 minutes. Last Saturday in Athlone also the final section of the All Ireland Juvenile Indoor Championships took place and two Waterford athletes got medals Emily O'Mahony Waterford was second in the under 19 triple jump and Kate Nolke Ferrybank wa third in the long jump under 16. Recently at a meeting in the USA Barry Keane Waterford AC competing with North Carolina University had a very good time for a 10000 metres race of 29 minutes 12.74 seconds his first race over the distance.

On Sunday last at the RSC the Annual Mc Donald's Ferrybank Sports was a terrific success with a record entry from many parts of the country. There were many winners from clubs in Waterford . Best Club Overall Award - United Strider's, New Ross - 49 points

Road Race Results
260 competed in the 6 th Annual MTS Bradband Ballinroad 5 km road race last Friday evening and Andrew Connick Ferrybank was first home in 15 minutes 31 seconds, Noel Murphy Waterford was second in 15.45 and Cian O'Riordan West Waterford was third in 15.51. First lady home was Sally Forristal St Joseph's in 18.03, Lucy Holmes West Waterford was second in 18.14 and Madeline Loughnane Thurles was third in 19.03 it was Race 1 of the Elvery's /Intersport Azics Series, there were 100 walkers in the walk Proceeds to Ballinroad Soccer Club Development Fund. On the same evening the InauguralMartin Halley Memorial Road race over 5 km was held in Carbally as well as a walk and it was a very enjoyable event despite the rain,Adam Porter was first man home and Janet Quinlan first lady

The death took place recently of Mrs Liz Martin Swords Co Dublin the former Liz Mountain Dungarvan a very prominent middle distance runner in the late 1960's and early 1970's. She competed in the European Junior Championships in 1970 and in Dublin in 1968 won the Catholic Student Games 800 metres title, the same year she was second in the All Ireland Intermediate X Country Championship,in 1969 she won the All Ireland Juvenile u17 800 metres and the Tailteann Games 800 m, she was Irish senior Schools Champion in the 800 metres in 1970 and won our County senior title in 1970 also.The death also took place last week of Mr Michael Lennon,Donnycarney Dublin father of Bro Patrick Lennon St Augustine's Abbeyside a man well known in Athletic circles.All involved in Waterford athletics send their sympathy to both families.
