A look back to 40 years ago this Sunday on an historic day on Limerick Racecourse for Waterford and Irish Athletics Sunday March 25 th 1979 at World Cross Country
A report in the Irish Independent on the following day said "They will talk about this for ever more .Never again will such an ear splitting roar echo across the Shannon as that which greeted John Treacy who made mincemeat of a great field of distance runners to successfully defend his World X Country title over a glue pot course on Limerick Racecourse yesterday. To make it a most memorable day in Ireland's participation in the 76 yrs history of the International X Country Championship the Irish men's senior team took the silver medals with the type of performance to make one feel very proud to be Irish. Among the scorers on the team were John Treacy,Gerry Deegan and Ray Treacy a brother of John's was also on the panel that ran, all three from Waterford, 21 countries competed. The twenty three thousand strong rain drenched crowd rose in unison to lift Treacy over the line but in truth he needed no assistance. He had set sail for home with less than a third of the 71/2 miles slog covered and had the race in his pocket by half way.In the end the great Polish runner Bronsilaw Malinowski came through with a sprint to take the silver medal with Antipov Russia third.Making it a great day for Waterford Brendan Quinn was a scoring member of the Irish Junior team just outside the medals being 4th of the 16 countries and Derek Grant was a reserve on the team, the Irish women's senior team were 7th of 17 countries,County Board officials Paddy Byrne,Martin Halley and Fintan Walsh were officials. Note; Malinowski in 1980 won the Olympic Steeplechase and in 1974 and 1978 also won two European titles in the same event and was also a European junior Steeplechase champion in 1970,sadly he was killed in a car crash in 1981 at just 30 years of age
