Ursuline All Ireland Senior X Country team Champions and Tadg Junior Champion.
Clongowes Wood College Grounds was the venue on Saturday last for the Irish Life Health All Ireland Secondary Schools X Country Championships and a number of athletes from Waterford Schools did extremely well as they won one individual title,one silver individual medal and a team title and a third team placing also and there were huge fields in each event. It was in the junior race that the individual victory came in a sprint finish by the Munster Schools Champion and an athlete very much in form Tadg Connolly from Abbey Community College who does his club running with St Senan's Kilmacow. In a top class field in the senior girls Lucy Holmes Árd Scoil na n Déise Dungarvan another ultra consistent athlete ran a blinder to take the silver medal leaving many fancied athletes in her wake and making it a great senior event for Waterford, Ruth Heery Waterpark was 5th and Tara Ramasawmy Ursuline 8 th. Ursuline Convent won the team title and Árd Scoil na n Déise were third.The winning Ursuline team was Tara Ramasawmy,Emma Caulfield,Anna Duffin ,Anna Fanning,Aisling Lowe and Hannah Burke. Well done to all the girls and to their teachers Sean Foley and Pauline Lamb.It was the second year in succession that the senior girls team title came to Waterford,last year Waterpark won it.Others to secure high placings at individual level were Cian O'Riordan CBS Dungarvan 15th in senior race,Tommy Fennell St Augustine's 16 th in junior with his twin brother Rory18 th,Aoife Allen Mercy 17 th in senior race with Emma Caulfield Ursuline 19 th in the same race.
A;ll Ireland Master's
A number of athletes from clubs in the County competed at the All Ireland Master's Indoor Championships in Athlone last Saturday and there were gold, silver and bronze medals won. For Waterford AC Tom O'Brien had a double in the over 50 section in the long jump with a record 5.24 metres and also in the high jump,Liz Colcough won the 60 metres hurdles o40 and was second in the high jump, Aisling Ferguson was also second in the 800 metres o 40 as was Anna De Courcey in the over 45 high jump and Paschal Halley was third in the long jump o 45.For West Waterford Joe Gough had an effortless win in the 800 metres o 65 and John White won the o45 3000 metres walk and for Tramore Shirley Fennelly was third in the 60metres o 50.
Cork winner in Dunhill
Over 300 entered for the second Annual Dunhill/Fenor 10 miles road race on Saturday last and from an early stage it resulted in a battle for honours being fought out by two athletes ,last years winner Eoin Lyons Focus on Fitness and Kevin O'Leary East Cork.In the last two miles the Cork athlete opened a gap and eventually won the race in 55 minutes 44 seconds with Lyons second in 56.11 and Andrew Fleet West Waterford was third in 59.43.First lady home was Caitriona Fennelly Kilkenny City Hrs in 68 21, Benvon Lyons was second in 68.43 and Siobhán Kennedy Focus on Fitess was third in 69.22.The category winners were Women; Junior Emily Goff Ferrybank,.F35 Joan Mahony Waterford, F40 Naomi Doonan Saturday Road Runners, F45 Gabrielle Power do,F50 Ann Dunford West Waterford ,F55 Anne Fitzgerald Waterford. Thurles one,two in Dungarvan
120 competed in the Déise College 10 km in Dungarvan on Sunday last and two athletes from Thurles Crokes fought out a very close finish with John Fitzgibbon winning in 33.18 and John Treacy second in 33.19 ,Raivis Zakis West Waterford was third in .first lady home was Sally Forristal St Joseph's in 37.41,Kate Veale was second in 40.37 .and Liz Nyhan was third in 41.12 both West Waterford.Category winners were Men;M40 Danny Smyth (Ind) M45 Mark Rowe West Waterford, M50 Johnny O'Connor do,M55 Martin Hayes do Junior Patrick Power Ind.Women F35 Julie Kenneally Youghal,F40 Angeline Drennan West Waterford, F45 Sandra Moore do, F50 Ann Hennebry Waterford Tri Club. West Waterford won both team prizes. It was the final race in the Ml Roche Carpets Series and the overall winners were Raivis Zakis and Sandra Flynn both West Waterford
Munster Schools Indoor Games
Athletes from Waterford schools figured prominently at the Munster Secondary Schools Indoor Games in Nenagh on Tuesday March 5th.Enily O'Mahony St Augustine's College won the senior long jump and was second in the 60 metres,Sophie Jackman Yeats College won the senior 600 metres,second placings went to Sean Mullarkey Dungarvan CBS intermediate shot putt,Saoirse Allen Mercy Convent intermediate 600 metres, Paula Igwe Ursuline intermediate hurdles,Tadg Connolly Abbey CC junior shot putt St Declan's Kilmacthomas minor relay,and third placings went to Katie Nolke Ursuline intermediate long jump and high jump, Anna Fanning Ursuline intermediate 600 metres
Muster Road Championships
On Sunday March 3 rd the Munster Road Championships were in Dundrum C o Tipperary over 4 miles for Senior,Novice and Master's men and women and thee were a number of good Waterford performers in large Fields. In the senior men's race Andrew Connick Ferrybank was 7th overall and Noel Murphy Waterford 9 th ,Noel was 6th Novice. In the senior men's team race Ferrybank were second the scorers being Andrew Connick ,Eoin Lyons,Jake Bagge and Warren Roche while in the ladies o35 Louise Morgan Ferrybank was 3rd.
Clubs note change
It has come to the County Board's attention that the RSC is not available on Monday May 6th as previously arranged for the County Track and Field Championships. Therefore it has been decided to move the date to Sunday May 19th. The two County Championship dates will be Sunday May 12th and Sunday May 19th at 11 am both days .
