In Athlone on Saturday last the Irish University Indoor Championships were staged and Kate Veale representing Hibernia retained her 1500 metres walk title with a time of 6 minutes 25.50 seconds,she was also second in it in 2017,Grace Furlong UCC was second n the triple jump ,Miceál Power CIT was a close up fourth in the 3000 metrrs in 8.27.76. For WIT Aaron Tierney Smith won the 60 Metres hurdles,Ryan Carthy was second in the high jump and their men's relay team were third
Munster Indoor Championships
A number of different grades were included in a Munster Indoor Championship fixture in Nenagh last Sunday . At senior level athletes from Ferrybank to win titles were Andrew Connick in the 1500 metres,he was also second in the 800 metres,Cara Kennedy in the weight throw and she as third in the shot putt.In the under 23 grade Emily Nolan won the 60 and 200 metres,Grace Furlong Waterford won the triple jump and was second in the long jump and third in the 60 m Jake ,in the junior grade Emily O'Mahony Waterford won the hurdles and triple jump and was third in the long jump, Jake Bagge Ferybank won the 1500 metres, EoinKenny was second in the 200 metres and Jake Costelloe third in the long jump both Waterford and Eoin Maher Ferrybank was also third in the 400 metres.
Many Master's titles
In the Master's Championship there were many Waterford winners and three Waterford AC athletes set records ,these were Tom O'Brien M50 high jump and long jump the latter a National record also,Paschal Halley M45 400 metres, John Dineen M40 400 metres,the other winners were Liz Colcough F40 hurdles and high jump,Anna DeCourcy F45 high jump these all had second and third placings also, Richard Hayes was second M45 800 metres and Aisling Ferguson was second twice in F40 200m and 800 m,for Ferrybank Pat Kennedy had two thirds in M60 weight throw and shot putt and for West Waterford Terri Gogh won the F70 60, and 200 metres and shot putt and Gregory Fitzgerald was third in the M45 200 and 400 metres.
Eddie Raicevic Finisk Valley had an under 11 treble at the Munster under 9 to 11 indoors in Nenagh last Saturday winning the 60 metres,long jump and shot putt with a championship best .throw Maya Rossa Blackwater won the u 11 shot putt again a CBP. On the same day in Nenagh Kate Veale West Waterford won the Munster senior 3000 metres walk in 13.57.38
Murphy wins on home soil in Dunhill
300 competed in the 13 th Annual Anne Valley 5 Miles road Race in Dunhill on Saturday last and Noel Murphy a native of Dunhill won it leading all the way,his time being 27 minutes 40 seconds,second was Eoin Hearne Ferrybank in 29.08 and Tony Quinlan Waterford was third in 29.19.First lady home was Sinéad Murphy a native of Kill in 32.52, Mollie Hutchinson Ferrybank was second in 33.11 and Kealey Tideswell Clonmel was third in 33.44. Munster Schools X Country
On Friday next February 15 th the Munster Secondary Schools X Country Championship Finals are in WIT in Carrignore at 12.30 pm with races for boys and girls in four grades minor,junior,intermediate and senior. Many athletes from Waterford schools will compete and quite a few are expected to challenge for individual honours and team awards are also up for grabs.
All Ireland Senior Indoors
On next Saturday and Sunday the All Ireland Senior Indoor Championships are in Abbotstown with an 11 45 am start both days. Several athletes from Waterford will compete including Thomas Barr in the 400 metres flat ,no doubt building on his speed for later hurdle races this season, Others in the Ben Kiely will be in the same event, Megan Kiely is the 400 metres and Andrew Connick in the 3000 etres ll Ferrybank. Kate Veale West Waterford defends her 3000 metres walk title and Lisa Houlihan goes in the pole vault. This Wednesday the International Grand Prix is in Athlone and Thomas Barr is entered in the 400 metres flat race he won it last year,live coverage on TG4 at 7.30 pm.

Another Major Award for Joe
Just a few weeks after being chosen European Middle distance Master's athlete of the year Joe Gough learned last week that he was chosen by The World Master's Athletic Association as World Master's middle distance athlete of year the first Irish Master's athlete to receive both awards. After a terrific year in 2018 which saw him win two World Master's Outdoor titles o 65 and two European Masters Indoor titles o 65 in the 800 and 1500 meres both times the awards are richly deserved.
