Olympian 400 metres hurdler Thomas Barr starts his outdoor season this week end across channel at two venues.On Friday evening in the Great City Games in Manchester City Centre he runs in a 200 metres hurdles race at 6.15 pm and then on Sunday afternoon he is taking part in the Loughboro International meeting in the 400 metres hurdles at 2.50 pm in a fairly high class field. His big event this season will be the European Championships in Berlin,they are there from August 7 th to 12 th.
Munster Schools Finals
On Saturday next the Munster Secondary Schools Track and Field finals are in Castleisland Co Kerry and it will be a long day of competition in four grades minor,junior,intermediate and senior. Lots of boys and girls from Waterford schools will compete and quite a few are strongly tipped to win titles.First event is at 10 am and full timetable is on Munster Schools Athletics Website

The East Munster Boys Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships in Templemore on Thursday last were dominated by athletes from Waterford schools who won many titles.Doubles were recorded by the following; Senior Eoin Kenny De La Salle 100 and 200 metres,Intermediate 400 and 800 m Jake Bagge Ard Scoil na Mara Tramore and high jump and javelin Cathal Scanlon St Declan's Kilmacthomas.The other winners were as follows starting with Senior;3000 m Hugo Blair Waterpark,2000 m Steeplecghase Aidan Rogers Newtown School,110 m hurdles Shane Monagle Ard Scoil na Mara Tramore, high jump Ciaran Buenaventura St Augustine's, long jump James Murphy Ard Scoil na Mara,shot putt Sam Mathe Waterpark, Intermediate 110 m hurdles Gergo Villany St Augustine's, hammer Cormac Farrell De La Salle, steeplechase Ben Keane do, 1 mile u 16 Matteo Mary St Declan's Kilmacthomas. Junior 800 m Callum Hurley Ard Scoil na Mara, high jump Owen Buenventura St Augustine's, hammer Darragh Moynihan do, Minor 100 m Mark Dobrakowski Waterpark, 1500 m Conor Fanning do, shot putt Tadg Connolly Abey CC, 75 m hurdles Chris Davidson do.
County Championships Day 1
In ideal weather conditions on Sunday last the first section of the County Track and Field Championships were in the RSC and all clubs in the county were represented. and all got medals.Two athletes won 5 titles each and these were Cathal Scanlon Waterford in the Youths 400m, 300 m hurdles ,javelin, triple jump and shot putt and Paula Igwee Ferrybank achieved her victories u16 in the 100m,250 m hurdles,long jump,high jump and shot putt. Five had trebles Lorna Monahan Ferrybank junior 100,400m and triple jump,Dara O'Neill Tramore u15 100m ,250 m hurdles,triple jump, Isobelle Gaffney West Waterford in the u 9 60m,300m and long jump, Petra Igwee Ferrybank u 12 60 ,long jump and high jump and Eddie Raceivic Finnisk Valley in the u 10 60m,300m and long jump and several had doubles.Some of the middle distance races were very competitive the following winning them Jake Bagge Youths, Callum Hurley u 16 both Ferrybank,Grace Fanning u12, Anna Fanning u16, Harry Colbert u11,MuireannDuffin u13, Adrian Burke u 15 all Waterford and Lucy Holmes West Waterford in the Youths grade, Niamh Barry Ferrybank u 10 was a real star and an example to all.. Thanks to all who helped out on the day and full results now with all clubs.
Connick wins again in Tramore
195 competed in the Splashworld 10 km in Tramore on Friday evening last and first home after leading all the way was the recent Waterford to Tramore winner Andrew Connick Ferrybank in 31 minutes 54 seconds,Eoin Lyons Waterford Triathlon Club was second in 33.24 and Trevor Power Waterford was third in 33.57. The first woman home again with a very impressive run was Ruth Fitzgerald Waterford in 37.02, Louise Morgan Ferrybank was second in 40.16 and Vanessa Bray was third in 43.16. The following were the category winners.Women F 35 Clare Sherman (Ind ) F40 Evelyn Haran Ballygunner,F45 Jackie Mc Gee Tramore,F 50 Ruth Hennebry Waterford Triathlon Club, F 55 Bernie Prendergast West Waterford. Zakis wins in Ardmore
Also on Friday last in Ardmore the An Tobar 5 miles had an entry of 175 and first home was Raivis Zakis West Waterford in 26.46,Kevin O'Leary East Cork was second in 27.03 ad Fkadu Kebede was third in 27.55 First Lady home was Sally Forristal St Joseph's in 29.45, Madeline Loughnane Thurles Crokes was second in 30.18 and Kate Veale West Waterford was third in 32.08. It was race 4 in the Intersport Elvery's /Asics Series
