Forty years ago this Saturday John Treacy won the World Cross Country Championship in Bellahoustan Park Glasgow on a desperate course, hilly and very heavy. Just twenty years of age his last X country run before the race was in December when he won the National Senior Inter County individual title in Kilbarry in Waterford leading Waterford to their third team title in a ro,.two weeks before Glasgow he won the American Collegiate Indoor 3 miles title. In the race -190 from 20 countries ran- he was always in the leading group and together with Antipov Russia and Lismount from Belgium a former European Marathon champion they broke away and with 1000 metres to go John went and the rest is history. Gerry Deegan in conditions totally unsuitable for his style ran a terrific race also to finish 14 th overall and Ray Treacy ,John's brother was 71 st ,Ireland finished 6 th in the team race. In the junior race Brendan Quinn had a fine run and when in the top five he had the misfortune to fall but got back up to finish a very creditable 11 th with the Irish team again 6th,it was a great day for Treacy and also for Waterford athletics, those were the days that memories are made of.
