RTE Greatest Sporting Moments
Last Thursday five more great sporting moments were featured on RTE Television of the sixties and seventies and John Treacy's second World Cross Country title victory in Limerick in 1979 was among them and it brought back memories to many here in the County including the "Eurovision Singer" eluded to by Des Cahill at the end of the piece. Eventually Munster's famous victory over the All Black's won on the night and John's effort was voted second by viewers. The panel of Ted Walsh, Brian Kerr and Ger Loughnane were brilliant. It was great to hear people we know connected with a particular sport being so well up on other sports and being so gracious with Kerr and Loughnane giving the vote to John Treacy's moment. How often do we hear people connected with a particular sport say there is no other sport like theirs when it couldn't be further from the truth. There are many great sports and many great sportsmen and women, but even many media and radio and tv stations have problems in prioritising sport on any particular day as they follow a certain reporting routine day in day out starting with the same predictable sports when another lesser sport may have a major result that day but is put well own the line.Well done to Ted,Brian and Ger and of course to our own superstar John Treacy.
