Almost 400 competed in the 48 th Annual Bluewall Paddy Flanagan Memorial Road Race from Waterford to Tramore on Saturday last in cold blustery conditions. Pior to the race a minutes silence was observed for the late Mrs Mary Flanagan who died a few months ago at the age of 92 and she had been present each year up to last year at the race .She was wife of the man whom the race remembers each year Paddy Flanagan. Leading from the start Philip Harty West Waterford was the emphatic winner in a time of 40 minutes 10 seconds,Conor Mc Cauley Leevale Cork was second in 41.08 and Mark Mc Kenna Waterford was third in 42.39 .First lady home was Adele Walsh St Senan's AC in 46.22, Ruth Fitzgerald was second in 47.12 and Sally Forristal St Joseph's was third in 47.22.West Waterford team of Sean Stillwell, Alan Kisella, Mossie Keogh and won the men's team prize and Waterford AC comprising Sharon Flynn,Gabrielle Blair and Jane Murphy won the ladies The following were the category results; Men junior Craig O'Brien Ferrybank,M40 Colm Costelloe Brothers Pearse,M45 Michael O'Sullivan Carrick on Suir AC,M50 Ray Hahessy West Waterford,M50 Dermot Power ,M60 Thomas Burns Waterford.Women F35 Sinead Murphy,F40 Naomi Doonan,F45 Jacinta Burke, F 50 Siobhan Kennedy ,F55 Bernadette Mitchell. The Flanagan family's special prize presented by Claire Flanagan went to the athlete numbered 92 in the race Marguerite Haley the reason 92 was picked was that Mrs Mary Flanagan was 92 when she died a few months ago.Fintan Walsh MC for the event welcomed the Flanagan family to the presentations and the organisers of the event Waterford AC through their chairperson Trevor Walsh spoke of the late Mrs Flanagan and again all paused for a prayer in her memory. He thanked Bluewall, the many Gardai who helped out both in the city and Tramore,the Order of Malta all the stewards and officials,the ladies catering committee,Tramore GAA Club for the use of their premises,Waterford AC committee and all those that competed,overall it was a very successful event despite the cold evening. At a meeting in France on Saturday Ben Kiely Ferrybank was second in a 400 metres race in 49.1 seconds and on Sunday Ravis Zakis West Waterfod won the Munster Marathon Championship in Limerick in 2 minutes 38 seconds.

East Munster Secondary Schools Championships
This Wednesday in Templemore County Tipperary with an 12 noon start the East Munster Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships for girls goes ahead and many girls from Waterford schools will be involved in minor, junior, intermediate and senior grades.
Waterford Primary Schools Sports
The RSC in the city is the venue this Wednesday May 3 rd of the Waterford Primary School Sports with a 10.30 am start. A sprint and middle distance race plus relays will be held for boys and girls from 1 st class to 6 th class. The event is purely for athletes from Waterford city schools and those in the surrounding areas in County Waterford.
Portlaw 5 miles on Friday
Race 2 in the Outfield Sports Series the Portlaw 5 miles is on Friday next starting at 7.30 pm. The Soccer club is being provided for changing facilities and Dermot O' Neill Pharmacy are the sponsor. All money raised goes to the Irish Red Cross Portlaw Branch Ambulance Fund

As usual the month of May will be a very busy one for athletes with numerous track and field fixtures. The following are the School fixtures for the month; Wed May 3rd East Munster Girls Championships Templemore @ 12.00 noon, also Waterford Primary Schools Sports RSC 10.30 am,Thur 4th May Primary Schools Sports Heats Big Schools St Augustine's @ 6.30pm,Wed 10th May East Munster Boys Championships RSC @ 11.30 am, Thurs 11th May Primary Schools Sports Heats Small Schools St Augustine's @ 6.30pm,Thurs 18th May Western Primary Schools Sports St Augustine's @ 6.30 pm, Sat 20th May Munster Schools Championships Finals CIT Cork @9.30 am. On Saturday May 13 th at the RSC the Annual Ton Le Ghaoithe meeting takes place. The County track and field championships will be at the RSC on two Sunday's the 14 th and 21 st both days starting at 11 am with the hammer at 10.30 am and all club's have been circulated with the programmes and rules re high jump starting heights. Club's are asked to circulate all the data to athletes at all training sessions and any coaches in clubs should be given a copy well in advance also.
