A very pleasant ceremony took place in Waterford City Hall in the Council Chambers on Tuesday Octobrer 25 th 2016. Olympic 400 metres hurdle finalist in RioThomas Barr from Graiguearrida,Dunmore East a member of Ferrybank AC was accorded a Civic Reception by the Mayor of Waterford City and County Adam Wyse and was joined by a majority of his fellow Councillors.The motion was proposed by Independant Councillor Joe Conway who was Thomas's first teacher in Killea National School,Dunmore East and seconded by Cllr John O'Leary Fianna Fail. Cllr Conway spoke in glowing terms of Thomas as a pupil and his cricket potential while at school. The Mayor said that on behalf of the people of Waterford he was proud to have the Reception for a truly great sportsman who brought such joy to the County and who acquitted himself admirably in Rio both on the track and off it too with his lovely demeanour. Other Councillors to speak were Cllrs Pat Fitzgerald a neighbour of the Barr's,James Tobin and Mary Roche. Present to were members of Thomas's family ,members of Ferrybank AC other clubs in Waterford and neighbouring counties and County Board officials and local dignatories. Thomas in reply said hewas humbled but yet honoured to be remembered by the Mayor and Councillors in his native County. and thanked all who had helped him in athletics in Ferrybahk AC and in Limerick UL. Brid Golden Ferrybank AC thanked the Mayor for the Honour bestowed on Thomas and said it was richly deserved and a day to remember especially for Thomas but indeed for Wateford and Irish Athletics.
Dublin City Marathon
Many from County Waterford competed in the Dublin City Marathon on Sunday last.The first Waterford man home was Paul Stephenson from Ballyduff Lower who runs with Rathfarnham and he was 23 rd in 2.hrs 31minutes .29 seconds,Trevor Power Waterford was 27 th in 2.33.44 and Ravis Zakis West Waterford was 35 th in 2.35.18. In the National Championship the West Waterford o 35 team of Raivis Zakis, Dermot Ryan and Brian Byrne took the silver medals and Trevor Power took the individual bronze o35 while Mary Ryan Jennings Waterford was first over 60.
County Fixture on Sunday
On Sunday next November 6 th the County B Juvenile u 9,11,13,15, and Master's X Country Championships are in St Augustine's College Grounds Abbeyside at 11 am, First 6 home in juvenile races get medals,no team prizes. In the Master's there will be individual medals for O35 and O50 (Men and Women) and one team category O35 where all athletes over 35 can count towards a team. The distances here will be 4000m (women) and 7000m (men).

A number of deaths with athletic connections took place in recent weeks.Mrs Eily Cowman Ballyadam Fenor mother of former athlete and long time committee member of Tramore AC Dan Cowman was laid to rest in Fenor Graveyard on Tuesday last.Mr Michael (Mixie Long ) Ballinaneesagh an athlete in the late nieteen fifties and earky sixties with Waterford AC died in mid October and Johnny Kennedy Summerhill Terrace father of Joe Kennedy a fine athlete with De La Salle and Waterford AC and an official himself died in late September.All involved in Waterford athletics send their sympathy to all three families.
