In his final race of the season and competing against the Worlds best in Zurich last Thursday evening in the Diamond League meeting Thomas Barr finished 6 th in the 400 metres hurdles in 49.34 seconds ,the race with a very close finish involving most of the field was won by the Olympic Champion Klemont from the USA in 48.72, Culson from Peurto Rico who was disqualified in the Olympic final was second in 48.79 he was the bronze medalist in the London Olympics, Van Zyl South Africa was third in 48.80 he was a World Junior Champion and Commonwealth Games and African Champion. It was a most competitive race with Thomas in 6 th place just .62 seconds behind the winner and losing nothing in defeat after a week of appearances at various venues here at home and his graduation also coming in to the bargain,roll on 2017 with the big ,the World Championships in London in August. Incidentally Thomas showed what a great All Rounder he is by finishing second in the Sack Race at Electric Picnic, who knows this could be an Olympic event in Tokyo in 4 years time.
Ledingham wins Ballybeg race.
170 runners and 49 walkers competed in the Annual Cill/Barra 6 Km event in Ballybegin Waterford on Saturday evening last and after a very good race up front for most of the run between James Ledingham West Waterford and Frank Quinlan Waterford the former pulled away in the final kilometre to win readily in 19 minutes 22 seconds, Quinlan was second in 19.34 and another Waterford runner Noel Murphy was third in 21 minutes. Adele Walsh St Senan's comfortably won the ladies section in 22.31, Sylvia Malone Waterford was second in 23minutes and Elaine O'Donovan was third in 24.43. The category winners were Men Junior Craig O'Brien Ferrybank,M40 Des Colbert Waterford, M45 Michael O'Mahony, M50 James Grant, M55 Tony Latham,M60 Harry Beaver Ladies Junior Rachel Fitzgerald, F35 Mary Molloy Carrick on Suir, F40 Mags Kearney, F45 Geraldine Curham, F50 Maggie Griffith.Waterford. Connick wins in County Wexford
On Saturday evening Andrew Connick Ferrybank won the St Pauls AC Wexford 5 miles road race in Kilrane in Diamond League Run and Niall Tuohy was third. Ferrybnak AC also won the team prize with these two athletes plus Shane O'Rahilly 6 th and Louis O'Carroll 10 th.
Sanofi 5 miles on Friday
On Friday next the Sanofi 5 miles run and walk goes ahead on the outskirts of the city on the Old Kilmeaden Road and entries will be taken at the Sanofi factory from 5.45 pm .The proceeds go the Multiple Sclerosis Society,the walk starts at 6.30 pm and the run at 7 pm.
Two Open Cross Country fixtures take place in the coming weeks. The AdamstownOpen in County Wexford is on Sunday next September 11 th at 12 noon with races for boys and girls under 9 to 16 as well as junior and senior, lots of athletes from Waterford clubs will compete there .On Sunday September 25 th the Kilmacow Open starts at 1 pm with races for boys and girls under 8,9,10,12,14,16,18 junior and senior with master prizes also. On Tuesday September 20 th at the RSC the Annual Walsh's Car Sales Ferrybank AC Waterford Primary Schools Cross Country goes ahead confined to Waterford schools. The County Convention takes place on Friday next September 9th in De La SalleCollege,Waterford at 8pm and all clubs are asked to be represented.
Munster Schools Combined Events Championships 2016 - Due to the closure of Nenagh Indoor Stadium for renovations, these Championships will be held in Cork I.T. on Wednesday 5th October.
