At the European Youths Championships in Tbilisi Georgia last Thursday Órla O'Connor Waterford AC and Miceál Power West Waterford AC both competed in their first major Championship. In the 5000 metres walk final Órla in her second ever race over the distance did quite well finishing 10 th of the 18 competitors in a time of 24 minutes 57.33 seconds in a temperature of 29 degrees Centigrade Five of the athletes in front of her had personal bests with the winner from Turkey setting the fastest time in Europe this year of 22.50.22 while another Irish girl Niamh O'Connor Celbridge was 15th she had beaten Órla a few times this year. Later on this evening Miceál Power West Waterford went in the 3000 metres final where he finished 14th of the 19 that competed in a time of 8 minutes 49.00 seconds the race being on by a Serbian athlete in 8.09.06. On Saturday Shane Monagle Ard Scoil na Mara Tramore a member of Tramore AC was the sole representative on the Irish schools team at the Schools International in Ashford in Kent.he competed in the 110 metres hurdles and finished 8 th in the event in 14.20 seconds, the race was won by an English athlete in 13.03.
Thomas selected for Rio.
Last week Thomas Barr Ferrybank AC was selected on the Irish team in the 400 metres hurdles for the Olympic Games in Rio from August 5th to 21 st He becomes the second member of his family to be an Olympian as his older sister Jessie competed for Ireland in London in the 4 x 400 metres relay in 2012.Since the Olympic games of 1980 at least one Waterford athlete has competed in each Games with John Treacy the silver medallist in the Marathon in 1984..
Quinlan romps it
133 runners plus a number of walkers competed in the Annual Alan Everett Memorial 5 miles run and walk organised by Waterford AC in aid of Irish Coast Guard in Woodstown last Friday evening and Frank Quinlan easily won it in 26 minutes 55 seconds,Noel Murphy was second in 28.40 and PJ Scollard was third in 28.52 all three Waterford AC. Sylvia Malone was first lady home in 31.43, Joan Mahony was second in 34.14 and Sinéad Brannigan was third in 34.21 again all three from Waterford AC The category winners were as follows;Men junior; Craig O'Brien Ferrybank, M40 Paul Wyse Ind,M45 Brendan Reidy Waterford AC, M50 Ray Hahesy West Waterford, M55 Walter Keane do, M 60 Gerard Lynch Clones,Co Monaghan.Women Junior Michelle Mc Donald St Senan's,F35 Mary Molloy Ck on Suir, F40 Mary Phelan, Ind, F45 Diane Behan Waterford, F50 Maggie Giffith do, F55 Kathleen Kennedy do. Waterford AC are holding "how fast can you run a Mile on the TRACK" this is aimed at runners of all abilities and more importantly the non club runner. This will take place in the RSC for 6.15 pm for registration and races to start at 7 pm on Thursday 11th August & Thursday August 15th. Chip timing sponsored by Kieran O' Mahony of Total Timing. These mile events are FREE to all taking part.
