Day 1 of the County Track and Field Championships were held at the RSC on Sunday last and all clubs in the county were well represented West Waterford, Ferrybank,Tramore ,Waterford, KCK, Blackwater and Finsk Valley and all had medal winners. The following won four titles each Cathal Scanlon Waterford U15 100, 250H,Triple Jump and Javelin, Emily O'Mahoney do U16 100, 250H, HJ and TJ, Dion Ryan do U18 100, Triple Jump, Javelin and Discus and trebles were had by Tom Halley Tramore U 12 600m, LJ and Turbo Jav, Caoimhne Dwyer West Waterford U18 100, 400 and Triple Jump, Lance Baylon Waterford) U17 100, 300H and 400 m doubles were recorded by Muhamid Oladati Ferrybank U9 Turbo and 60m, Luke Power West Waterford U16 Javelin and Dicsus, Eoin Kenny Waterford U17 Discus and Javelin, Paul Sullivan do Junior 100m and Triple Jump, Eoghan Flynn do, Junior Javelin and Discus, Petra Igwe Ferrybank U9 60m and LJ, Claire Butler Tramore U11 Turbo and 60m, Ally Cunningham West Waterford U12 600m and HJ, Paula Igwe Ferrybank U14 Shot and 80m, Emily Goff do U17 400m and 1500m. Many Munster titles won
At the Munster Junior and under 23 Championships in Templemore on Bank holiday Monday last there were many medals won by Waterford athletes gold silver and bronze. For Waterford AC at junior level Dion Ryan won the high and triple jumps and was third in the 110 m hurdles,Órla O Connor won the 3000 metres walk ,Eoghan Flynn the javelin,Órlaith O'Brien javelin,second placings went to Anna O'Connor 3000 m walk Luke O'Brien javelin, Kathleen Heery discus, and third placings to Ruth Heery 3000 m walk Kathleen Heery hammer, Cian O'Brien high jump,Grace Furlong triple jump James Murphy triple jump, for Ferrybank Cormac Mc Cann won the 400 metres and Phoebe Murphy was second in the 100 metres and Denise O'Connor Tramore had a second in the long jump and a third in the 400 m hurdles. In the under 23 section Hayley Fitzsimmons Waterford was first in the shot and discus and second in the javelin, Georgina Griffin was second in the discus and third in the javelin,in quite a few of the events the entries were very poor. In the juvenile pentathlon events Waterford AC had wins with Emily O Mahony under 16 and Evan Hayes under 14 and Jack Corcoran was third under 13 ,Anne Corcoran Ferrybank won the under 18 title and Corey Scanlon Finisk Valley was second in the under 11. On the same day Waterford AC competed in the St Abban's Sports in Co Laois and had three wins by Orlaith Walsh,U12 60 m, Sarah Heery U14 shot putt and Raad Khanu 14 shot putt and also had seconds and thirds
East Munster Girls Results
The East Munster Girls Secondary Schools Track and Field Championships were held at the RSC on Wednesday last and athletes from Waterford schools had many wins with three girls having doubles Anne Corcoran Ursuline in the senior 400 m and shot putt, Sarah Jacob also Ursuline in the junior shot putt and discus and Katie Murphy Abbey Community College in the minor 100 and 200 metres. In the senior javelin Orlaith O'Brien Yeats College set a record with a throw of 39.95 metres. beating the old record set in 1977 of 37.24. St Augustine's College Abbeyside won the junior and senior cups and the Best Overall School Award The other winners from Waterford schools were as follows; Minor 100 m Kate Byrne St Augustine's,800 m Una O'Brien Waterpark, Junior 1500 m Kate Hickey Árd Scoil na n Deise, javelin Ciara Mc Kenna St Augustine's, high jump Kylie Heinen St Declan's Kilmacthomas, triple jump Emily O'Mahony St Augustine's, Relay Ard Scoil na n Deise, Intermediate; steeplechase Molly Hutchinson Ursulins, 2000 m walk Orla O'Connor Ursuline, pole vault Aoife Lai St Augustine's, triple jump Lorna Monahan Waterpark,Senior 100 m Aisling Mullaney St Augustine's, discus Kathleen Heery Ursuline long jump Denise O'Connor Árd Scoil na Mara, shot putt Chloe Fennel St Augustine's Relay Árd Scoil na Mara. lots of second and third placings were also secured.
Murphy wins in Portlaw
The Tom Jordan Memorial 5 miles road race was held in Portlaw last Friday evening in ideal weather conditions and 180 competed. Official starter was Hayley Fitzsimmons well know Special Olympics athlete from the Portlaw area and Brian urphy Ck On Suir was the comfortable winner in a time of 25 minutes 22 seconds ,Frank Quinlan Waterford AC was second in 25.49 and Niall Sheill St Killian's Wexford was third in 26.05 .First Lady home was Jacqui Carthy Kilmore Co Wexford , in 29.25, Clare Annan Clonmel was second in 29.44 and Sylvia Malone Waterford was third in 30.06 It was race 2 of the Outfield Sports 3 County Challenge Series and proceeds went to Irish Red Cross Portlaw. and the event was excently organised and stewarded
Jessie back in action
It was great to see Jessie Barr Ferrybank after a two tears absence due to injury back in action on Saturday last at the International meeting in Belfast. She finished a close third in the 400 metres hurdles after fading in the final 50 metres her time was 58.50 seconds the race being won by Tess Turner Great Britain in 58.12,at the same meeting Paul Murphy also from Ferrybank was 7 th in the 400 metres in 49.42.
Winners in Cork
On Saturday last in Cork at the Leevale Sports there were a number of winners from Waterford clubs. For Ferrybank Cara Kennedy won the hammer, Neasa Murphy the high jump ,Niamh Whelan was second in the 100 metres as was Andrew Connick in the 1500 metres while Tadg Brennan was third in the 800 metres. Thomas Houlihan West Waterford won the pole vault and for Waterford there were second placing by Grace Furlong in the triple jump and Órlaith O'Brien in the javelin and Dion Ryan was third in the high jump
East Munster Boys Championships
This Wednesday May 10 th the East Munster Boys Secondary Schools championships are in Templemore Co Tipperary at 11.30 am and lots of athletes from Waterford Schools will compete in four grades,minor,junior,intermediate and senior. Full timetable available on East Munster Schools Athletics website.
Ton Le Ghaoithe -Wind Sprints Meeting
On Saturday next at the RSC at 12 noon the second Annual Ton Le Ghaoite Sports will have most of Ireland's top senior athletes competing men and women and entries close online on Wednesday May 11 th and definitely no entries taken on day Events on the programme are sprints 100 and 200 metres ,sprint hurdles ,javelin and high jump and only athletes eligible for senior competition can compete
County Championships Dy 2 on Sunday
On Sunday next at 11 am the County Track and Field Championships conclude at the RSC and all clubs have the full programme of events long ago. The main thing that all young athletes should take from these events is enjoyment win or lose. A reminder to those looking after athletes to keep them well informed of when their event is scheduled especially very young athletes who may need attention.. Events are called out well in advance over the PA and repeated.
Splashworld 10 km on Friday
The rescheduled Splashworld 10 km road race will take place on Friday next May 13 th at 7 pm in Tramore Entries to total timing .ie and on the evening in Tramore
