In Prodebrady in the Czech Republic last Saturday morning Órla O'Connor Waterfod AC achieved a qualifying time for the 5000 metres race walk at the European Youth Championships in Tbilisi in Georgia in mid July The qualifying standard was 25 minutes 30 seconds but Órla was well inside it with a time of 24 minutes 46 seconds, another Irish athlete Niamh O'Connor Celbridge in the same race also secured a qualifying time with 24.34 her second time getting the standard. As always getting the qualifying standard is not always a certainty of being selected, the selectors have the final say and the Youths Championships are in Georgia so financial constraints may have a bearing on the size of team that travels.
